How do shock absorbers work?
The working principle of a shock absorber is mainly based on its internal structure and the flow characteristics of the oil.
The basic working principle of a shock absorber is as follows:
The shock absorber is a key component in the automobile suspension system, which is installed in parallel with elastic elements (such as springs) for attenuating vibration. When the frame (or body) and the axle due to vibration generated by the relative motion, the piston in the shock absorber will move up and down. This movement causes the oil in the shock absorber chambers to flow repeatedly from one chamber to another through different orifices. During this process, the friction between the walls of the pores and the oil, as well as the internal friction between the oil molecules, creates a damping force on the vibration. This damping force makes the vibration energy of the car into the thermal energy of the fluid, and eventually absorbed by the shock absorber and emitted into the atmosphere.
Characteristics of the shock absorber
Adjustment of damping force: the damping force of the shock absorber will be increased or decreased according to the relative motion speed between the frame and the axle (or wheel), and is related to the viscosity of the fluid. In order to regulate this contradiction, the damping force of the shock absorber varies during the compression and extension strokes. In the compression stroke, the shock absorber damping force is small, in order to give full play to the elasticity of the elastic element, moderate the impact; while in the extension stroke, the shock absorber damping force should be large, in order to quickly damping.
Type of shock absorber: automobile suspension system is widely used in the cylinder type shock absorber, which two-way action type shock absorber in the compression and extension stroke can play a shock absorbing role. In addition, there are new types of shock absorbers such as gas-filled shock absorbers and resistance adjustable shock absorbers.
In summary, the shock absorber realizes the attenuation of vibration through its internal structure and the flow characteristics of the oil.
